Girona Cycling Tour – Day by Day

Awesome rides and daily activities for non-cyclists

1: Ola! Girona

Day 118 SeptemberSunday

Arrive into Girona. We will collect you from the Girona train station and take you to your hotel.

Girona is so full of things to discover, that depending on your arrival time, our local knowledge means you will not waste a moment.

We will get you set up on the bikes and, if time permits make final fitment adjustments on a local ride.

If the ride can’t take place, we have a number of Girona discovery suggestions before we meet up at our welcome dinner. Time is unhurried in Northern Spain and Girona takes that to another level. There is so much to absorb, history, culture, architecture and local scenery, that your afternoon will have you relaxing without realising it!

Dinner at our hotel.

Included meals: dinner

2: Explore the surrounds

Day 219 SeptemberMonday
70km / 45 miles Distance ride
950m / 3100 feet Accumulated elevation

Girona. So much to unpack. For any avid cyclist Girona is a bucket list mecca. History buffs will know Girona for its incredible pre BC and medieval provenance. As a foodie Girona is at the top of your list for tapas excellence and spanish, mediterranean and catalan cuisine.

Our first day is all about Live,Laugh, Ride … discovering the popular Girona highlights, but also the gems the locals prefer to keep to themselves!

A unique circuit through Girona itself – your private city tour, before we head into the countryside and arrive at a wonderful climb just outside the city proper, infamously known locally as George Hincapie’s favourite. A descent of dreams and an immersive rolling ride though beautiful catalan countryside and through seldom visited villages that date back 1500 years.

It’s a picturesque ride and will leave you in no doubt you have arrived in Girona … the REAL Girona!

Non – riders – 4-5hr Guided Tour of Girona to learn about the legends and history of the town as well as guided visits to The Cathedral Santa Maria, the Arab Baths and the Museum of the History of the Jewish Community.

Both riders and non riders meet up for lunch in Girona.

After lunch we have some time for exploration of the old town.

Dinner will be in one of Girona’s wonderful thoroughfares enjoying the culinary delights that this region has to offer.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

3: The Costa Brava ...

Day 320 SeptemberTuesday
70 km / 45 miles Distance ride
1200m / 3950 feet Accumulated elevation

After discovering more of Girona’s hidden corners on our cross city route, we point our handle bars towards the glistening azure Mediterranean waters and rugged cliffs of the impossibly-beautiful Costa Brava. Our route will be through the famed fertile agricultural plains of picturesque vineyards, olive groves and farmlands that produce the legendary ingredients for the enviable mediterranean lifestyle.

Climbing through the aromatic Massis de les Cadiretes you will be rewarded with some incredible panoramas of the surrounding areas we have ridden and the Mediterranean coastline that awaits.

Multiple stops are unavoidable along the breathtaking roller coaster coastline to be able to rake it all in. Countless small pristine coves and fishing villages, and a never-ending coastline will leave you awestruck. We finish on the waterfront for the freshest of fresh seafood lunch (remember Spanish lunch is not midday!) with the non cycling group who will be suitably in holiday mode after their day by the beach. Girona return is via the minibus!

Non – riders – Fancy a day at the beach? Maybe a dip in the Mediterranean? Well today you have your own guided tour to the beach and some of the medieval villages of the area. A relaxing morning with time for shopping! We then meet up with the riders for lunch before heading back to Girona.

This afternoon there is an optional Game of Thrones Guided Tour for those keen fans wanting to see the filming locations from Season 6.

4: The famous Rocacorba

Day 421 SeptemberWednesday

You will be asked by everyone you know, when they find out you visited Girona, “Did you do Rocacorba?” After today you can say, yep! Been there done that! Was it harder than expected? Easier? Did you see any Pro’s on it? Is it overrated? Only you can tell by experience! And isn’t that the fun of the adventure!

One thing is for sure. You have to do it full strength. We will ride out to it today from Girona. For the hard core, the option is there to ride back too … for research purposes you understand!
Non – riders – Today you get to discover the secrets of Catalan gastronomy. Experience the Spanish food culture with a market visit followed by a hands on cooking class. Take part in preparing a delicious lunch made from local produce and then enjoy your creation with some fine regional wine.

A word from our clients

Don’t take our word for it - here's some comments from happy VeloRoovians

Having recently organized a Sunshine Coast Cycling tour with Steve at Veloroo, my husband and I were extremely impressed with how professionally run the tour was conducted and how reassuring it was to have Julia in the support vehicle. His local knowledge of the beautiful quiet country roads was second to none and being able to accommodate our different fitness levels was brilliant. Would have no hesitation in recommending Veloroo for your Cycling Tours. We will definitely be back.Took in August 2020
A sixth (or seventh, you stop counting once you feel like adopted 'family') return to VeloRoo. Previous hirer of bike and the odd riding session - this time a first experience of their residential tours of the Pyrenees.

Completely wonderful experience and exactly as Steve and Julia had been describing for years: sold as seen! Both experienced in doing the grafting - and making it look effortless. Super little group of matched riders, all local knowledge deployed, kit washing and venue stops perfect. Great kit supplied and nil expenditure once on the road.

What particularly impressed me is that my fellow riders came from the US and Aus for this - I flew 90mins from 'down the road' (UK) - that's how special something of this scale and personality level is.

Refreshes the parts other big-name tours can't reach: a secret gem with a characterful, friendly VeloRoo family experience.Took Pyrénées Iconic Climbs Challenge in Oct 2019
