Sunshine Coast Hinterland Cycling Holiday Itinerary

1: Welcome!

Day 11 MaySaturday

Arrive at your apartment at Endless Summer at Coolum Beach. Settle into the Sunshine Coast vibe and get ready for your week of cycling!

This afternoon we will collect you from your accommodation and spend a few hours on the water connecting culture to the coast.

Not only is this a chance to get to know your fellow travellers but we will also enjoy a sailing experience in the traditional waters of the local Kabi Kabi or “Saltwater People”. Take a step back in time to experience the life of the traditional land owners who have lived off these bountiful coastal waters for thousands of years. Connect with these ancient people through story telling, didgeridoo and entertainment provided by your Indigenous Storyteller Guide as you cruise to sites of significant cultural significance, places for hunting and gathering and places where Dreamtime stories and songs originated. Spot sea birds, turtles and dolphins as you enjoy an array of delicious bush tucker inspired catering that brings the flavours and textures of the rainforest and the ocean to life.

Included meals: dinner

2: More Maroon than a QLD Pineapple!

Day 22 MaySunday
65km Distance ride
1150m Accumulated elevation

Today’s cycling journey is designed to show off local roads with distinctive character – some might call them character building. VéloRoo invites you to get into the spirit of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland as we take you through some of the most charming and lesser-known nooks and crannies of South-East Queensland.

Our morning climb – we drive out to our starting at Woombye, home of The Big Pineapple – is strangely reminiscent of our favourite local French climbs. It has a homely vibe to it and the Australian bushland provides a pleasant shady cover as we work our way up. The roads truly are diamonds in the rough, making for a unique riding experience.

Once we reach the top of the range the going gets bumpy – but the views are worth it. Julia and Steve have put together a range of distractions and detours to explore the heights of the range to ensure you don’t miss a thing, before we start our descent.

You are in for a great, great descent, with sweeping hairpins and long, fast straights that will make you want to hoot with glee. The cycling route for this descent is bordered by wild, natural beauty the entire long, long, long way down.

Highlights:

  • Riding the ridge line with sublime 360-degree views,
  • The meandering valley roads,
  • Mountain top vistas,
  • The aromas as we ride through plantations and farmlands.

Included meals: lunch

3: The Sunny Coast Classique

Day 33 MayMonday
110km Distance ride
1070m Accumulated elevation

Sit back and relax, soak up the chill atmosphere of an Australian holiday – with a bonus challenge – today’s route! Even a flat day in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region is going to be bumpy. Today’s ride, a round trip from our base in Coolum through the luxurious vacation mecca of Noosa and on into the picturesque Noosa hinterland, is the longest day ride in our current repertoire. A dubious honour, making for an unforgettable day of cycling.

The Classique is a ride our French friends would refer to as bonne pour les yeux – good for the eyes – although you feel the burn, the epic scenery will inspire you to pull through.

We have a couple of sneaky detours planned to make sure you get only the very best views and impressions; by the time we roll back home along the Sunny coast all your senses will be well and truly sated.

Highlights:

  • Breathtaking ocean views as we depart in the morning,
  • Gyndier Drive – car-free and yours for the taking,
  • Cruising along Hastings Street, a Noosa icon,
  • Cycling through historic Australian towns – especially the time bending main street of Cooroy.

Included meals: lunch

4: 27 Million Years in the Making!

Day 44 MayTuesday
87km Distance ride
1275m Accumulated elevation

Today, your VéloRoo cycling holiday stage will take you into the wild and untamed heart of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to discover hidden vistas that will take your breath away. This is a relatively hilly stage with a flat finish, full of Sunshine Coast charm. Heading out from Landsborough, we will ride for the hills until we hit the stunning scenery of the Blackall Ranges.

Macadamia and pineapple plantations, as well as custard apple farms, line the route towards the Blackall Ranges, one of the best kept secrets when it comes to cycling highlights in the South-East Queensland. At VéloRoo we like to take the road-less-travelled and this quiet, rambling route is one of our all-time riding favourites, especially the broad panoramic views of the Glasshouse Mountains, translucent and mysterious in the winter sun.

Everything about this ride is picturesque, from the tiny villages dotting the countryside, to the roadside fruit stalls with their honesty boxes. Even the odd 10% climb this route throws our way is too gorgeous to be a serious struggle.

And the descents – you will be giggling like a bunch of school children on excursion!

Highlights:

  • The Glasshouse Mountain views,
  • Spectacular scenery throughout,
  • The call of the whip birds,
  • Wide open skies and plenty of sunshine,
  • The descents.

Included meals: lunch

5: The Heritage Tour

Day 55 MayWednesday
80km Distance ride
729m Accumulated elevation

Today’s stage is a classic voyage of discovery as we take a ride through history via picturesque roads winding about small mountainside farms. Our chosen route feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the busy seaside towns.

This round trip, starting at our base in Coolum, will take you into some of the most ancient landscapes in Australia. Skirting volcanic plugs, we’ll work our way up the sneaky hill gradients to be rewarded with stunning views and truly ancient treasures.

This supported ride highlights the Sunshine Coast’s natural history and gives you a glimpse of some of the oldest farm and timber establishments of the region – including sprawling cane fields and pineapple farms – if you want to buy a pineapple, today’s your day!

To break it up, we allow for a leisurely coffee stop in Yandina, a beautiful local secret nestled on the bank of the South Maroochy River. Our favourite café serves a rich coffee brew made from their signature in-house roast; the perfect pick-me-up before we cycle back into Coolum.

Highlights:

  • Striking, ancient Australian landscapes,
  • Cycling through some of the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands oldest settlements,
  • Technical descents,
  • The emerging coastline as we return to Coolum.

Included meals: lunch

Australian Sunshine Coast Hinterland Cycling Holiday

A word from our clients

Don’t take our word for it - discover why our cycling adventurists have fallen in love with the Occitanie Region of Southern France and the VeloRoo way.

I was luckily enough recently to have a few days in Noosa (glad to live on the QLD side of the boarder!). I have been there before and even taken my bike so I could explore the surrounding hinterland. However, this time I decided to take a guided tour with VeloRoo as I wanted someone who knew the area and the best bike friendly roads (rather than me trying to wing it and getting lost and not really getting the most of the time I had). I am so pleased I did. VeloRoo looked after me all the way; from our start at Noosa beach (blue sky, white sand, rolling waves – almost didn’t want to leave but glad we did) to our finish point back at my hotel. We were blessed by a magnificent warm winter morning (sorry southerners) and not much traffic getting out of Noosa and into the hills. The roads were smooth, the scenery sublime and Steve provided a running commentary of the history and interesting facts of the area we were riding through which made this more than just a ride in the hills. All the while the VeloRoo ‘support wagon’ followed us in case we needed anything. If you love to ride and are lucky enough to be in the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland, I recommend getting the Veloroo team to guide you. You could try and navigate your own way – I have done this before – however having someone know the best routes based on your riding ability and what is happening in the area was invaluable.Sept 2020
Having recently organized a Sunshine Coast Cycling tour with Steve at Veloroo, my husband and I were extremely impressed with how professionally run the tour was conducted and how reassuring it was to have Julia in the support vehicle. His local knowledge of the beautiful quiet country roads was second to none and being able to accommodate our different fitness levels was brilliant. Would have no hesitation in recommending Veloroo for your Cycling Tours. We will definitely be back.August 2020
