A Week in the South of France Cycling Holiday – Day by Day

An authentic rural French experience, free of commercialism, full of spellbinding charm, history and heritage.

1: Bonjour!

Day 1Tuesday/Mardi

Welcome to your discovery of the Real South of France! Your VeloRoo holiday commences when we collect you from either Beziers town, train station or Beziers International airport by 3pm.

After a short transit we arrive at our quaint French village situated amongst the vineyards and to your Chambre d’hotes (B&B), your home away from home for the week. It’s time to unpack and get ready to Live, Laugh, Ride…

We introduce you to your VeloRoo steed and get you set up with any final adjustments.

We will enjoy a welcome drink before heading to dinner at a restaurant in a nearby village and talk about the week ahead and the wonderful region you will be discovering!

Included meals: dinner

2: Discover Beziers

Day 2Wednesday/Mercredi
57km Distance ride
650m Accumulated elevation

This mornings ride takes us into Beziers. A nice introduction to the area. Enjoy coffee in the main tree lined Allee Paul Riquet and watch the town come to life. On the ride you will pass through the vineyards surrounding this historic town. In May you will be surrounded by wildflowers and in September you will surrounded by grapes. We will ride back to base to freshen up before returning to Beziers and a chance to explore.

For your first South of France lunch with us the menu is a surprise. Olivier, the owner and Chef, creates dishes from the best local produce sourced on the day. Always an amazing dining experience!

We then visit the Cathedral of Saint Nazaire followed by the World Heritage listed UNESCO Canal du Midi, built during the reign of Louis XIV, from 1666 to 1681. It spans an incredible 240km. We will see the Ecluse de Fonserannes, a staircase lock allowing boats to be raised a height of 21.5m over a distance of 300m through a series of locks.

On the way back to our village we visit a local Olive Farm. You will see the olive oil production process and have the chance to taste their variety of quality olive oils including our regions very own native variety that is AOC recognised. A great gift to take back home.

Tonight we will have a relaxing dinner at the B&B to talk about your first adventures in the South of France.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

3: It's all about wine!

Day 3Thursday/Jeudi
54km Distance ride
730m Accumulated elevation

Framed by both the Mediterranean sea and the dramatic Massif Central this narrow region is blessed with fertile land. Before modern wine was established in the 1800’s, before the turbulent Roman era of over 1000 years ago, the Greeks arrived 2500 years ago and recognised and created a wine and olive region. On today’s ride we discover how the region has adapted and survived intact despite it’s turbulent history of religious crusades and land conquests.

We also discover the schiste terroir of our local appellation AOC Faugeres that gives our wine it’s character, from wild heavily wooded hills through to garrigue scrub. Our route takes in many villages where wine has been the life blood dating back to Roman times.

The roads we ride are predominantly free of traffic providing a sense of remoteness whilst sometimes only being a few kilometres from the main road. We also pass some of the 18th Century castles and chateau’s that were established on the wealth from success of the new age agricultural exploitation of the time.

For those joining us on our September Vendange tour, the vineyards will be a hive of activity. You may even get caught in traffic – French style – with heavily laden trailers of grapes making their way to their Domaines for the start of their journey into delicious wine..

We will return to your B&B for showers and to freshen up before heading out. We will revisit one of this mornings villages …. it’s time to taste some wine with a picnic style lunch.

You will have some time for a relax before we head out for dinner in the walls of a 12th century abbey in the heart of a medieval village.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

4: Another wine region - St Chinian

Day 4Friday/Vendredi
80km Distance ride
1189m Accumulated elevation

Today’s ride highlights the terroir diversity in this special corner of the Occitanie. We’ll ride though 2 completely different Wine Appellation regions. Also en route is a wonderful climb, the original road across the range in fact, long since bypassed. 6 kilometres long and averaging 6% winding up through fragrant Mediterranean garrigue scrub. Towards the top you will be rewarded with views across the vineyards to the Mediterranean.

Lunch is at one of our favourite cafe’s under the plane trees. After lunch we have a 15 km ride home, but not just on any road. The exact route Cadel Evans took the year he won the coveted Maillot Jaune!

Tonight we have dinner in a neighbouring village.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

5: Market Day

Day 5Saturday/Samedi

A chance to rest your legs from the bike and do some exploring on foot. We visit the historic town of Pezenas for the buzz and atmosphere of the Saturday market. Don’t forget to follow the lead of the locals and pause for a coffee stop and people watch.

Not only is there the fresh produce to admire and perhaps sample but Pezenas also has a beautiful historic centre full of artisanal shops and many cafes.

We meet back up at midday to take a short drive to the Mediterranean for lunch over looking the water. After lunch you can dip your toe into the Mediterranean or just sit and enjoy a gelati while you people watch.

Tonight we will have dinner in our local village tapas bar.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

6: Gorges l'Orb

Day 6Sunday
75km Distance ride
1358m Accumulated elevation

One of our personal favourites. Today’s cycling route will highlight the diversity of the landscape over a relatively short distance. Starting with our beautiful vineyard landscapes we head into the foothills with a gentle climb through a typical vigneronne village to the limestone plateau and into the native scrub land. At 20km in we will stop for a coffee in a picture postcard village on L’Orb river.

After taking in the views, we discover the L’Orb river gorge,  flanked either side by the mountains. With picturesque scenery we follow the river towards its junction with the river Jaur, crossing the river over a stone arched bridge and commence climbing. The scenery is your reward as the expanding views unfold before you.

We arrive at our lunch stop in a quaint little village tucked away in the valley. This is a hidden gem. After a delicious lunch we return to home riding through the St Chinian vineyards and limestone landscapes.

And remember, on all of our rides, if you’re not up to the distance there is always short cuts or shorter ride options available.

Relaxing dinner at the B&B enjoying delicious local pizza!

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

7: Circulade Villages

Day 7Monday/Lundi
62km Distance ride
814m Accumulated elevation

Our ride takes us to the best medieval Circulade villages, unique to this tiny region of France. They have protected their citizens for over 1,000 years and are identified as some of Europe’s oldest examples of small town planning. The roads have been selected to offer beautiful views of the undulating vineyard landscape and the first ranges of the dramatic Escandorge Mountains.

We will return to your B&B for showers and to freshen up before heading to lunch. Today we have a relaxed picnic style lunch experiencing local produce.

After lunch we visit a nearby village and walk through it’s narrow streets up to the site of its medieval castle and its restored fortified chapel to take in the wonderful expansive view over the plain below.

This evening we take a short drive to discover an 11th century chapel in the ruins of a medieval village and enjoy sunset aperos before returning to your B&B for our last dinner together.

Included meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

8: Au revoir!

Day 8Tuesday/Mardi

South of France Cycling Tour

A word from our clients

Don’t take our word for it - here's some comments from happy VeloRoovians

I completed a 9 day cycling trip with Steve and Julia in September. It exceeded all my expectations - cycling, food, hospitality, personalised service, attention to detail - the full French experience. I highly recommend the South of France Vendange tour, especially during grape harvesting season (!). We were also able to organise added extras on either end of the tour (Mediterranean border crossing from Spain to France) and a summit of iconic Mt Ventoux. Steve and Julia go above and beyond and are great company. Lots of thoughtful gestures along the way. Steve will even serenade you with 80s songs if that helps you on the ascents. I am already planning the next trip with VeloRoo.Sept 2018
The full package and the most generous of hosts for our first ever cycling tour. Extremely knowledgeable, friendly and professional. The bikes are top notch and immaculately maintained. The rides were wonderful and well adjusted to our experience, interests and fitness, with helpful coaching and guidance from Steve. The scenery was amazing - only bettered by the food and wine which was superb! Julia and Steve - thanks for the singing and the laughs. Hope to be back soon.May 2018
