Some Nostaglia – 1962 Tour de France

by

Cycling in france has so much history. Having spent the day planning our tour group for the 100th running of the Tour de France in 2013 I came across this short film on the 1962 Tour de France. It’s an amazing insight into the conditions 50 years ago. I still think it’s strange to watch them ride without helmets.

There is even talk of doping which was referred to as “the charge”. Unfortunately the drugs they used were not so much performance enhancing as pain suppressing. This meant that many men pushed themselves beyond their physical limits.

Back then they also use to raid cafes to get Champagne & beer to help them with their thirst on a hot summers day!

A word from our clients

Don’t take our word for it - discover why our cycling adventurists have fallen in love with the Occitanie Region of Southern France and the VeloRoo way.

Currently on VeloRoo's 2018 Tour de France tour. We are having a wonderful time cycling the 'hills' of Southern France. Steve & Julia are great tour leaders. They have taken us on some great rides with spectacular scenery, found great spots to watch the TdF, and treated us to some lovely meals at local restaurants. As a small group tour they are able to provide a flexible itinerary and a personal experience that you love in a holiday!Took Tour de France Cycling Tour in July 2018
Peaceful, Quiet, and Beautiful Languedoc Region. It is hard to put into words just how much we enjoyed our ride with Steve and Julia. We contacted them after visiting their website, and arranged a custom cycling tour. Steve was happy to organize three days of riding that met our skills and interests through the amazing hills and parks in the area. We did longer rides each day (95, 125, and 85 kms) that allowed us to explore the region and really get an authentic experience. We were extremely happy with the rental bikes and appreciated their smooth ride, light weight, and excellent maintenance. Steve and Julia really made us feel comfortable and made our whole experience one that we will never forget. Just an outstanding experience that we would recommend. Next time we bike in France, Veloroo will be our first call!Took Customised Cycling Tours in June 2018
